A Gig for Gainesville

Google is challenging communities to “Think Big with a Gig.” If selected, Gainesville will have networks that deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today. Gainesville was one of hundreds of cities throughout the United States that responded to Google's challenge. Gainesville residents submitted videos telling Google how our city would use ultra high-speed bandwidth networks. Nearly 8,500 people showed their support for Gainesville through Gig4GNV's Facebook group. Google ended the challenge on March 26 and will announce its selected community or communities before the end of the year, but there is still a lot to learn and do!

Learn why Gainesville is the right choice for a Gig.

Google is looking for the perfect place to test an experimental ultra high-speed network, and Gainesville fits the bill. We have one of the largest public universities in the nation, one of the nation's leading healthcare systems and a thriving economy based on a diverse population. Watch the video below to see how we're earning a Gig for Gainesville!

Create a video telling Google what your organization could do with a Gig.

Even though the contest has ended, you can still let the world know what Gainesville can do. Be creative! Be edgy! To keep things consistent, please start your piece with the question:

Why a Gig for Gainesville?

1. Why would a Gig for Gainesville will benefit you/the community? What could you do faster? How would it make your life and the lives of those around you better, easier and more fun? What kinds of cool new things could you do?

And/Or

2. What can you/the community do to help Google build this network faster and more efficiently? Google wants to know that Gainesville will be a great city to work with and that we will be creative in working around development obstacles.

  • Submit your piece by uploading to the Gig4GNV Facebook group, uploading to YouTube with “Gig4GNV” in title or e-mail it to gig4gnv@gmail.com. You can also record a video testimonial directly from your web cam on the Video Tab of the Facebook Page.
  • Become a Facebook fan of Gig4GNV.
  • Follow Gig4GNV on Twitter.
  • Spread the word! The more people we have backing this, the closer we get to a Gig!
