GTEC Startup Sinmat, Inc. Awarded $2.6 Million

In a national competition, local technology startup company Sinmat, Inc. received $2.6 million from the U.S. Commerce Department’s Advanced Technology Program (ATP). The ATP awards are given to technologies for scientific and technical merit as well as for technologies with the potential for broad-based benefits to the U.S.

“We and our partners are extremely honored to receive this ATP award,” said Dr. Deepika Singh, President and CEO of Sinmat, Inc. “ATP awards are made on the basis of rigorous, competitive peer review, and funds from the ATP will enable us to make major technological progress to meet growing market and customer needs.”

Sinmat, Inc. received the ATP award to advance a key component in the making of microchip wafers. Microchips are used in everyday electronics like computers, televisions and cell phones, and Sinmat’s improvement is estimated to save the semiconductor industry as much as 80 percent of their current costs.

Rajiv and Deepika Singh are world class scientists, and their technology is going to revolutionize the semiconductor industry,” said David Day, Director of University of Florida Office of Technology Licensing. “The Singh’s are so deserving of this ATP award, and we look forward to a long, successful relationship with Sinmat, Inc.”

This isn’t the first time Sinmat, Inc. has been recognized. In both 2004 and 2005, Sinmat also received R&D 100 awards for their technologies. The R&D 100 Award Competition is an international competition that recognizes only the most promising new products, processes, materials and software developed and introduced to the market. Sinmat, Inc. is a startup in the Gainesville Technology Enterprise Center (GTEC) program. GTEC provides early stage technology startup companies with the tools, training and infrastructure to help them become self-sufficient, financially viable technology enterprises. GTEC’s mission is to grow technology-based companies in Gainesville and Alachua County to create high-wage jobs and strengthen the local economy.
